How to use the shorthand
Recognize the machine, keep the surprise
Calling out a trope is not the same as dismissing a story. The pleasure is often in the variation: who loses their memory, what the vow actually costs, whether the sect becomes a home, and which “villain” gets the most devastatingly specific explanation.
Beginner translation: when fans say a drama is “very xianxia,” they may be talking about the mix of cultivation, immortal realms, reincarnation, fate, spiritual trials, and romance that turns personal feelings into cosmic stakes. You do not need to memorize the vocabulary before you start watching.
