Vibing Now · Where the Mask Ends

The Aftermath Has an Aftermath

Family discipline, maternal negotiations, and a request no one wanted to hear.

Spoilers through Episode 17

Spoiler boundary: This installment stops at the end of Episode 17. No previews, later episodes, novel material, or endgame information.

The banquet may be over, but nobody gets to go home and quietly process what just happened. Lady Li is ready to defend her newly found daughter, while the family weighs the cost of making the scandal even bigger. Heng’e is sent away, and Guo Yufeng is ordered to spend her days at a shrine.

There’s an awkward complication to Lady Li’s fierce new maternal energy: she spent sixteen episodes threatening A-Chou. The woman she now wants to protect has had excellent reasons not to trust her.

A quiet moment for Wei Rao and Lu Zhuo—while the rest of the household processes absolutely nothing quietly.

Family discipline, delivered with a whip

Lu Zhuo’s grandfather punishes him for leaving the imperial inspection to pursue the bandits. Wei Rao steps in, takes responsibility and kneels beside him. For a family so concerned about the survival of its heir, they do put him through an impressive amount of physical testing.

Family support comes with a remarkably punishing definition.

Later, Wei Rao hears the old duke regret arranging the marriage. Other family gossip paints her as a scandal, despite everything she has done for the household. She leaves before hearing Lu Zhuo defend her—because a conveniently timed exit is apparently another member of this family.

Lu Zhuo glances sideways
Lu Zhuo’s face when this family opens its mouth.

The two have a gentler moment, too. Lu Zhuo reminds her that her title carries obligations to ordinary people; she jokes that, now her mother is the emperor’s beloved Lady Li, she can throw her weight around. She has earned the title, and she is not inclined to surrender it.

Two mothers, very different negotiations

At the shrine, Guo Yufeng tells Lady Li about the bitter history behind her marriage into the Wei family. Their confrontation turns to their daughters: Lady Li threatens Yufeng’s, while Yufeng takes satisfaction in the distance between Lady Li and Wei Rao. Lady Li insists she will try to win her daughter back. News later reaches the family that Guo Yufeng has died by suicide.

Lady Li’s approach to Wei Rao is quieter. She gives her daughter time after their rocky start and promises she was faithful to Rao’s father throughout his life. It doesn’t erase what came before, but it gives the two something other than immediate reconciliation to work with.

The request no one wanted

Lu Zhuo tries to bring Wei Rao to his bedside by pretending to be ill, but the family criticism she overhears only deepens the distance. When she finally meets Lady Li, she asks for a divorce from Lu Zhuo. The request lands hard, and the episode closes with his health failing again.

The question running through this hour isn’t simply whether the people around Wei Rao care about her. It’s whether they will let her decide what she does with that care—and with the life she has only just recovered.
