First, which Untamed?
Here, The Untamed (2019) means the Chinese live-action drama 陈情令 — Chen Qing Ling. The original series has 50 episodes. It is not UNTAMED (2025), the English-language Netflix thriller starring Eric Bana, or another work with a similar title.
Mo Dao Zu Shi (魔道祖师) is the novel by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, published in English as Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: Mo Dao Zu Shi. The novel inspired both animation and the live-action drama; they are different versions, not interchangeable episode guides. The performers below are the live-action actors, not a list of animation voice actors. The 20-episode The Untamed Special Edition is also a different edit: use the original 50-episode numbering for this companion's Field Journal.
The two leads: character names and performers
| Character name used in listings | Personal name | Courtesy name | Live-action performer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wei Wuxian (魏无羡) | Wei Ying (魏婴) — Wei is the surname; Ying is the personal name | Wuxian (无羡) — with the surname, Wei Wuxian | Xiao Zhan (肖战) |
| Lan Wangji (蓝忘机) | Lan Zhan (蓝湛) — Lan is the surname; Zhan is the personal name | Wangji (忘机) — with the surname, Lan Wangji | Wang Yibo (王一博) |
For these two entries, the personal-name and courtesy-name forms refer to the same character. Wei Ying and Wei Wuxian are not two performers. Lan Zhan and Lan Wangji are not two performers. Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo are the people playing those characters.
Why can one character have two names?
The distinction here is between a personal name and a courtesy name (字, zi), another name used in address. Keep the surname attached when comparing the forms: Wei + Ying / Wuxian, and Lan + Zhan / Wangji. This key explains those two pairs only; it is not a rule that every unfamiliar name in the drama is a courtesy name.
English listings may space the same names differently: Wei Wu Xian for Wei Wuxian, Lan Wang Ji for Lan Wangji, and Wang Yi Bo for Wang Yibo. Those spaces do not introduce another character or actor. Who uses a particular form of address can matter in a scene, but this pre-watch key does not interpret it.
One more character and performer
| Character | Live-action performer |
|---|---|
| Wen Qing (温情) | Meng Ziyi (孟子义) |
Wen Qing is the character's name; Meng Ziyi is the performer.
Credit source: The drama's official Japanese character listing explicitly pairs 温情 with 孟子義. Checked October 3, 2026. The linked page contains character descriptions and images beyond this names-only key; those descriptions are not reproduced here. This is a listing check, not an on-screen closing-credit inspection.
Keep people, groups, and your watch boundary separate
Gusu Lan, Yunmeng Jiang, and Lanling Jin are the group labels explained by the existing three-group pre-watch board. They are not performer names. The place-name note explains real-world echoes without mapping the fictional world onto a modern map.
For episode observations, choose your own safe-through episode in the Field Journal before loading entries. This name key does not load journal entries, change your saved boundary, or authorize anything beyond it.

Source notes
Checked October 3, 2026. Viki's official distributor listing explicitly pairs Wei Wu Xian with Xiao Zhan and Lan Wang Ji with Wang Yi Bo. WeTV's official listing corroborates the year, original episode count, and actor names; it does not supply a role-by-role credit table. These are distributor credit/listing checks, not a claim that we inspected on-screen closing credits.
The personal/courtesy-name distinctions and Chinese character spellings are checked against the Chinese-language series reference on Wikipedia, a secondary reference, not primary credits. Seven Seas' licensed novel listing supplies the author, English novel title, and adaptation distinction. WeTV's Special Edition listing identifies the 20-episode edit. Netflix's separate UNTAMED listing identifies the 2025 thriller and Eric Bana.
